This is a full circle fur post.
I showed you this photo the other day at the end of my post about the cardinals (who, I might add, have been keeping me busy). We haven't seen any bobcats for quite some time, although I've always suspected they are around, passing through when we aren't looking.
This particular day, the Reptile Wrangler (yes, it's time to adopt that title again) had walked along the path to get the pool skimmer. When he was walking back just a minute later, he passed this guy, just a few feet away from him, frozen in its little paw tracks. It must have been there the first time he passed by, but didn't see it. Chuck could see what this guy was eyeballing, so, rather then get in his way or even remotely allow the cat to think he might want to cut in on his action, Chuck came right into the house and told me I might want to get my camera. Without hesitating, I grabbed my camera and went to the Leah's bedroom where he said I would have a good view.
This guy was right there, stalking his...
breakfast.
He was keeping an eye on the door that Chuck had used to come into the house. A small squirrel was his catch.
He was also keeping an eye on me looking at him.
And... looking over his shoulder too. Nothing was going to share his awesome breakfast!
He sniffed it.
He pawed it.
He picked it up and tossed it.
And when he heard a little noise behind him...
he went back to where he started...
and turned around and sat down.
Which is when something in the sunshine caught his eye and he pounced over to it. A sprinkler head looked fun! And then, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted something else. A dried up leaf.
So, he pounced on that. Which led me to believe he wasn't too hungry after all. Or, he was just a really playful little bobcat. Or, since he knew I was watching, perhaps he was trying to get my attention away from his breakfast.
When he lost interest in the leaf, he went back to the sprinkler head. And then he actually walked out of my view and was gone for awhile.
The squirrel was gone and I caught some movement up above in the raised planter.
And this is what he was doing. Which, when I have watched these guys in the past, they completely clean themselves after feasting on their meal. I guess he just wanted to eat in private, which is really fine with me. I've witnessed enough "circle-of-life" food chain activity before.
I'd much rather see their pretty faces and snap photos through the window.
To all my visitors this spring who were hoping for a glimpse of wildlife...you missed it by just a little bit. It's when we are not looking that things creep up and surprise us.
Proof of that later.
