I started this blog just four months ago when we made our move from Colorado to Arizona. If you have been reading from the beginning (if not, I suggest you take some time to check out some of the older posts) you will know that we have had our share of interesting wildlife in our yard.
Who could forget the javelinas? Those less than attractive, snarly, hairy unwanted guests that found the dropped bird seed from the feeder. The one's that are keeping us from filling it again for fear that they will come back. Yep, those things I call "the pigs"!
And the bobcat that came in out of the rain. Or that washed in with the rain. Whichever it was, although kind of cute, I'm glad it went away with the rain and I have not seen it since.
Remember the owls with the piercing eyes and distinct call? They still come around occasionally, usually scaring me to death. When they were here during the "winter", they would sit up in the palm trees snoozing the day away. I could walk around under the tree and take their pictures without them seeming to mind. Occasionally, they would open their eyes and peer down at me. Now, however, if they are out there and I walk out into the yard, they take off and swoop down and then soar out across the sky. Their big wings flapping and the sound of them hitting the palm branches scare me every time.
I will probably not get used to hearing the coyotes at night. Especially when they seem rather close to the house. We see them running by the road and out in the open spaces, but I have not been able to get a good picture of one. Yet.
So, that left just a few things on the "predator" list that people said we might see. There are those few, "I've never seen in all the years I've lived here, so don't worry you probably won't" on the list. There was that Gila Monster that the girls saw on the driveway. Check. I didn't see it, thankfully just the camera phone picture Rachel snapped.
And then just the other day...

I spotted it at the end of the driveway. "A snake". Say that in a loud voice with a little shrill to it and you will sound just like me! Thankfully it did not have a rattle on the end of it's tail. I know you might be thinking how brave I was to get so close to it to get this picture...no worries...I was sitting in my car and used the zoom lens. You know me better than that.
I. do. not. like. snakes.
Evidently this one did not read the memo I put out saying no rattlesnakes or any kind of snake allowed.
p.s. To my brother-in-law in Texas. I'm still checking my shoes for scorpions...thank you very much!
