Lately, I've gone to some yard sales on a couple of
Saturday mornings. I've gone with my husband's cousin. I guess that makes her my cousin-in-law? She has a re-sale business selling books. So, she makes her rounds most weekends to hit rummage sales and yard sales. She's good at it too. It has been fun hanging out with her and we have had some good laughs at what people will try to sell.
For instance, the signage in the photo above! We thought this was hilarious that they were selling their old signs. In fact, we saw this on the first weekend I went out with her and were still laughing about it last weekend when we were out, only to run across them again in a different location. When I pointed them out to her she thought surely they were not the same ones until we noticed other things that were at the sale the weekend before. Things like old carry out containers full of condiment packages from the grocery store. Yep, same stuff. Different address. I wonder if they ever sold?
My goal for the yard sale adventure was to find a small book shelf ($3.00 score)and vacuum cleaner ($10.00 score) for the college girls dorm room. I was successful and now hope that my purchase will be put to good use now and then. I hope she is reading this..."college girl...vacuum those floors!"
It was actually a bit hard to go the second weekend with cousin, as the weekend before my old age self-esteem was seriously damaged. Being just a year apart in age, yes I will admit I'm the older one, it was fun seeing things that we remember from our youth. You know like the plastic barbie head that you could curl and style the hair. Or, albums like Eddie Money, Journey and Moody Blues. As we were taking a much needed restroom break at a grocery store she ran into someone she used to work with about 20 years ago. As I walked up to them, he turned, looked at me and then said to her... "Oh is this your Mother?"
REALLY???
Can I repeat here she is just one.year.younger than I am!
I was bummed for the rest of the day. Okay, a lot longer than a day. So to make myself feel better, I made a hair appointment and decided to do something about those grays. Everything I saved on the book shelf and the vacuum was spent on reviving my youthful appearance!
A few days later I was getting a routine blood draw after my yearly physical. I had to recite my name and birthdate to verify I was who I was suppose to be. The technician was staring at me and I thought, hmmm...I wonder if she is noticing my new color treatment? In her thick accent she said..."your complexion...it look so good." (That is really not anything people usually say to me. I have stock in Clearasil.)
As I stared at her with what had to be a very puzzled look she said... "our birthday's, they are almost same. We are same age. You don't have all the wrinkles like I do." This is when I paused and said.."well, there is this acne that I 'm dealing with and just spoke to my doctor about." She came in closer and took a good look and said ...
"oh I see now, well... that's what makes you look so young!"
Compliment taken. I think.
