quote monday

                     A fallen leaf
                       is nothing more than
                          summer's wave
                                goodbye.

Today it finally feels like we can wave goodbye to summer. It is very overcast, cool and a little sprinkle is in the air. A welcome relief. But, it could have waited until tomorrow because, today we are having some new windows installed. It hasn't rained in forever and today it is. We are hoping they can get them done between the drops. The cool air feels really good.

This photo was taken in Santa Fe when we were there in October. I spotted this stack of leaves that someone had carefully placed in an empty planter pot. It's something I would do. In fact, when Chuck came over to see what I was taking a photo of...  he said, "that is something you would do."

Yes. It is.

Happy Monday.

We must hang together or surely we will hang separately.

morton arboretum

Our recent long weekend trip to Chicago was a full one.
It was full of good family visits, good quiet memories,
heartfelt conversations, and full of autumn color.

We were fortunate enough to spend an afternoon at the Morton Arboretum. The grounds spread forever and walking through the trees was very relaxing. We marveled at the colors and the smells of the woods quickly brought back memories of childhood in the midwest, for both of us. I found myself humming Girl Scout tunes in my head, because I was suddenly sent back to those days, traipsing through the woods singing catchy tunes with a bunch of happy campers!

We had a bit of a hike from the parking area and most of the trees we passed were green. I was hoping we weren't going to be disappointed that the leaves hadn't started changing. Until I caught a glimpse of this... peeking through the green pines.

And then we got to the welcome area and saw this incredible fall display. I was happy!

We started our way through the rest of the park, seeing one pretty tree after another.

And to make it even more special...a few late bloomers still smiling up at us.
                                                The bees were happy too!

We had plenty of time to talk about the reason for our trip and shared alot of good family stories. The day before we had driven up to the northern suburbs of Chicago, where my family lived many years ago. Our family heritage is there and we were fortunate to have made a discovery while there. (I'll save that for another post). We visited with my Aunt in her beautiful victorian house and also spent some quiet time near family members who are greatly missed by all. Chuck and I enjoyed reflecting on the day while leisurely walking through acres and acres of trees. If the sky were blue that day (or any of the days we were there) it would have been the icing on the cake, but hey...it's the midwest and overcast skies are expected. It was temperatly mild and balmy for the end of October. Quite ideal!

                                                          Love these sidewalks!

Is this a great color or what?

This was such a peaceful swampy pond. I loved the small little peek of red... peeking out.

So berry pretty. Of course I had to.

We could knot help but notice this little creature.

Green or red? Both so pretty.

Yep...we wanted to lay down in the leaves for just a little while.

This one is just outstanding in its field!

I really love this photo. The layers of color go on and on and it just looks so delicate.

                                                         And then this rich beauty.

I think the dark branches intersecting though the leaf color is such a lovely contrast.

                                                                            Perfect.

The soft color sprinkling behind this green tree... Isn't nature something?

We walked all the way to the end of the park and were not disappointed at all. We were told the maples were beautiful towards the back of the park and they were. There were a lot of families and groups taking photos. Probably some pretty wonderful Christmas card moments happening that day. We took a few of each other and tried some infamous selfies. For some reason...we have a little trouble doing that. I won't be sharing all of those here, but our kids got a little enjoyment from the goofy shots we texted to them. I just don't know how they can get such good selfie shots when they do it. Us...

Okay...we did finally get one that was decent.

All of these photos will remind us of our weekend in Chicago and of all the family moments shared there. We are happy we were able to connect with his cousins and share memories with them. We thank them for having us and to Beata...thank-you for sharing your pass for our afternoon at the arboretum!

After our visit there we drove around Chuck's old neighborhood where he grew up. I've heard stories forever and after all this time it was nice to see where all those "growing-up years" happened!

So, just a little tidbit... Chuck and I were both born in different suburbs of Chicago. His family moved from Illinois to Albuquerque when he was fifteen. My family, leaving Illinois when I was in kindergarten moved to Kansas, then Texas, then Ohio, then back to Texas and then on to Albuquerque when I was a senior in high school. We met each other in an art class at UNM our first semester of college. Four years later, when standing in front of the clerk to get our marriage license, she looked at our birth certificates and said "Oh, you two are childhood sweethearts." We said no, we met in college. She insisted that we most certainly had to be childhood sweethearts because...as she turned our birth certificates around towards us, she said..."well...have you ever noticed this?" We have the same county clerks signature on our birth certificates. Born within 3 months of each other, in the same county, we have the same county clerk signature.

All together now..."awwwwww!"

care free and pumpkin folly

Well, by golly, it's time for a little lighthearted pumpkin enjoyment, don't you think?
I know the 31st has come and gone, but these pumpkins were too cute to not share. I want to get some of our 'fallscapades' on the blog before Thanksgiving and Christmas come and go. And, I just think getting lost in my pictures is a good thing to do right now.

I mentioned in my last post, that Ray Villafane, the master sand sculpture that did the incredible elephant in the plaza this summer, did this clever pumpkin display. He, by fame, won the pumpkin carving challenge on the Food Network some years ago. He lives in the area and we are lucky enough to get some of his talent right in our neighborhood.

So...pumpkins.

This photo was taken while it was still a bit light out. These saguaros are fake with a real pumpkin submerged in a vinegar solution to preserve it.

Here is that pumpkin, taken later when it was dark. The facial expressions and details are really amazing.

Another one. The colored lights change as the night goes on.

Besides the sugauro pumpkins, there were vignette displays all throughout the plaza. This is the mad scientist in his laboratory classroom. They had really great old pieces incorporated within the displays.

A hammock with a little guy just chillin' in the night air.

A few more photos of the real carved pumpkins in the solution. I thought this one was funny. "Do you like pumpkins with prominent upper teeth?"

They put what looked like glass eyes in some of them, which added to the coolness.

A side view of the one above. A bit of an interesting angle with the curve on the glass front!

Another vignette.

Close-up of the guy on the porch. Oh hey there!

This one had a hay hook that "caught" some of the little guys, taking them up to the hay loft.

Any ideas?...

Yep, the out house.

The saloon. It's a bit hard to see all the details in the photo, but the guy running out the front door was the card shark making a fast escape. The other guy was heading up the stairs, where the lady-of the-night was looking out the top window.
And this guy, face down on the porch...most likely having indulged a little to much in the drink.
                  Consequences. Always consequences.

This one was funny...look closely and see that the guy below narrowly escaped his fate when his                  stem broke off in the noose.
  The fight.

This one caught...presumably the next subject for the science lab around the corner.

Poor guy being roasted on the spit.

A closer look.

  Showing off some 'almost' pearly-whites.

Here is the whole science lab.
Zombie's, torture table and mad scientist, all conjuring up their next victims fate.

The pearly white teeth guy after the lights changed color.

As the bad guy passed-out from too much moon-shine...the pumpkin's tried to rescue their friends.

The distillery.

The whole event was clever and a nice way to spend a little time one evening. They were doing a workshop that night, teaching a large group of kids and adults how to carve the pumpkins... Ray's way. Creepy, funny, interesting and most of all...full of detail.

It was a gourd time!

fast lane

October skated in and zoomed out so fast for us. I knew, at the beginning of the month while looking at all the things marked on the calendar, that I would turn the page to November and wonder "what happened to October?"

But autumn happened. And, if you know Arizona like we do now, you know fall doesn't really happen here the way it should. So, getting to see it in some of its splendor was really a treat!

We spent some time in New Mexico for a conference and a little extra get-away. We were home for two days for a quick re-pack and we were off to Chicago for a pleasant few days seeing family and enjoying more fall color. I will get some photos uploaded and do a little catching up on my blog soon.
I have a few stories to share.

This little pumpkin cutie was part of the town display by the guy who did the amazing sand sculptures back in the summer. Wow! He's so very creative and it was a treat to wander through all of the  pumpkin displays. I'll try to get those posted here soon.

Until then...Happy November!
